CSG seizes explosives used for fishing, one held in Rameswaram
The Coastal Security Group (CSG) police in Rameswaram arrested one person and seized gelatin sticks and detonators from him. Police said he was using the explosives for fishing, a method known as dynamite fishing, which is banned.

The arrested person was identified as Veerapathran (45), a fisherman from Pudukudi near Thondi in Ramanathapuram, said CSG inspector Felix Suresh Peter. Police seized 65 gelatin sticks, categorised as ‘Class –II’ explosives, 34 ordinary detonators and 10 empty detonators, and four-metre long safety fuse from him.
Acting on a tip off from fishermen about dynamite fishing, a CSG team led by the inspector zeroed in on the group. Though they managed to nab Veerapathran, 11 others gave a slip and remain absconding.
A case was registered against the accused under Section 5 of Explosive Substances Act, which was later transferred to the local police in Thondi for further investigation, the inspector said.
Regional Deputy Director of Fisheries E Kathavarayan said if the accused fisherman was found guilty, action would also be taken under Tamil Nadu Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1983. Further investigation is on.
