State Transport Department bags nine awards

A press release from the secretariat said that the Tamil Nadu Transport Department has bagged nine awards in the recently concluded convention in which the performance of 62 State transport corporations across the country were reviewed.

As per statistics, more than 1.6 million buses are registered in the country, and the State Road Transport Undertakings (STUs) altogether operate 1,50,000 buses carrying roughly 70 million people a day and the ASRTU reviews the performance of all the transport corporations for effective administration.

“First place for highest performance in vehicle productivity (Mofussil Services), first place for highest mileage for litre diesel in urban areas and first place for minimum operational cost award [without the element of tax] were bagged by the TN transport corporations,” the release said, adding Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami congratulated transport minister MR Vijayabhaskar and transport secretary J Radhakrishnan for the continuous achievement.

“The State has bagged awards under categories like minimum operation cost, highest improvement in mofussil bus service, highest mileage in urban area and best tyre performance,” said a transport official, adding that the TN has been a trendsetter in the public transport system for more than three decades.

Particularly since 2013, transport corporations have been bagging awards for clean operations and effective mileage that reduces air pollution, the official said. For the fifth consecutive year, TN transport drivers have also proved to be efficient drivers bagging the first place for highest tyre performances, which means there is no much rash driving, the official explained.
