Rain lashes several districts, bring relief from heat
The southwest monsoon seems to gaining momentum in the state as several districts experienced widespread rains on Wednesday.

The showers brought relief from heat wave to the people in different areas like Tiruvarur, Salem, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Coimbatore and some pockets abutting the western ghats. Intermittent rains were lashing some areas from Tuesday night. Further, there has also been marked increase in the inflow into many dams across the state.
Sources said that the Tiruvarur district received mild showers around 9 pm on Tuesday. Hours later, the rain accompanied by strong winds intensified resulting in power cuts in some areas. The winds were so strong that electricity poles were brought down and overhead wires were snapped. The areas that went without power during the rains were Adiyakkamangalam, Andipalayam, Neelapadi and Kudavasal.
Sources said that more than 30 villagers witnessed power cut and people were forced spend nights in the dark. The power supply was restored only in the morning on Wednesday.
Other areas that witnessed steady showers from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning were Nanilam, Needamangalam and Thiruthuraipoondi.
According to the meteorological department, Kudavasal received a maximum rainfall of 26.2 mm in Tiruvarur district. Similarly, Pudukkottai district also experienced heavy downpour on Tuesday night which resulted in inundation of many major roads across the district.
According to farmers, this rain would support the groundnut cultivation, which was in the early flowering stage in delta region. If rains continued to lash the agricultural belts of central districts for a few more days, it would help crops to thrive well in germination, farmers added.
Tiruchy and Karur districts also witnessed good rains from Tuesday evening. According to reports, the rural pockets of the delta region has been receiving good spell of rains in the past few days. The meterological department has also predicted that there would be intermittent rains in the next 48 hours in many districts.
