Ten of the top 20 candidates in MBBS rank list for admission to government colleges under State quota got seat allotment in the Madras Medical College on the first day of MBBS/BDS counselling for open category. Health Minister C Vijayabaskar presented allotment orders to the top 10 candidates at the Tamil Nadu Super Speciality Hospital where the counselling was held.

A total of 970 seats were allotted on the first day of counselling for open category for MBBS/BDS courses in government colleges and self-financing courses under State quota. Two students were not given seats as they failed to meet the nativity eligibility.

Totally 1,737 MBBS seats are available in government colleges, 969 and 238 seats in self-financing and ESIC institutions. In the BDS section, 1,138 seats are available in Government Dental College and 83 in self-financing institutions.

The Tamil Nadu directorate of medical education received a total of 39,013 applications, of which 31,353 — 11,741 boys and 19,612 girls — were eligible.

    Minor chaos

Minor chaos marred the process initially following allegations of students from other States being included on Tamil Nadu rank list.

The issue intensified after DMK MLA P Thiagarajan posted a tweet claiming that names of 218 students from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala have been included on Tamil Nadu list. The MLA’s tweet with pictures of the rank list of students were widely shared on social media and it triggered doubts whether other State students have been included in the Tamil Nadu NEET rankings by using fake location proof.

Thiagarajan added that a resolution on behalf of the DMK will be sent to the senior authorities in this regard.

However, authorities of the Directorate of medical education denied the allegations and said that the certificates have been verified properly and there was no chance of any such error creeping into the rank list.
