According to the police, Sambath Kumar (62), a retired Air Force staffer from Sivasakthi Colony, his wife Baby Kamalam (52) and sister Jothimani (46) were travelling to Coimbatore when the incident happened around noon time. They were heading to a hospital there in a hired omni van to treat Jothimani’s leg pain.

The vehicle was driven by Velusamy (35) from Udumalpet in Tirupur district.

As the vehicle approached a blind curve on the Pollachi-Udumalpet Road, a mini jeep reportedly coming from the opposite direction rammed into the car in which the four were travelling.

While the front portion of the omni van was completely damaged, the load carrier fell on its side.

In the impact of the collision, Sambath Kumar and driver Velusamy were reportedly crushed to death on the spot.

On receiving information, the Komangalam police rushed to the spot and sent the bodies of deceased for post mortem at Salem Government Hospital.

An injured Baby Kamalam, Jothimani, and the driver of the load carrier, Anand (29), were rushed to Pollachi Government Hospital in an ambulance. However, Baby Kamalam died on the way.

After administering first aid, Jothimani was shifted to a private hospital for further treatment.

The police said the collision could have occurred due to poor visibility following heavy rains. The incident led to traffic disruption for over two hours on the arterial road.
