Prisoners’ biz ventures reap profits
The recent reformatory steps by the Tamil Nadu State Prisons Department has started yielding rich dividends. Five petrol pumps operated by the prisoners have made a profit of Rs 87 lakh in three months and the prisons department through prisons bazaar has made a turnover of Rs 239 crore in the past seven years, Law Minister CVe Shanmugham informed the state Assembly on Tuesday.

Shanmugham also said that the prisons department would continue to explore the options of opening more pumps and extend the production of consumer items manufactured by the prisoners. The Minister also announced procurement of drones with colour cameras for nine central prisons. He also noted that the number of suicides in the state prisons has dipped due to rehabilitation programmes. In the current year, only one person had committed suicide, he said.
To ensure mental fitness the inmates will be exposed to yoga and meditation, the Minister added.
To improve the amenities for prisoners, dining room with locker box facilities will be constructed at a cost of Rs 2.59 crore. Western toilets will be replaced with the old lavatories and piped water supply will be provided in all the central prisons and at the special prisons for women.
Sanitation and safety parameters will be enhanced in special prisons and generators will be provided for borstal schools and all sub-jails, Shanmugham said.
The existing sub-jail in Tindivanam will be shifted to the new court complex at a cost of Rs 6.5 crore and the state is also working on space crunch that is reported inPuzhal prison.
Shanmugham also said that new post of civil assistant surgeons to special prisons for women will be created in Madurai and Coimbatore districts. Creation of one post of psychologist in special prisons for women in Madurai and Coimbatore also announced. Administrative offices for Chennai range deputy inspector general of prison in Puzhal, quarters for judges and members of Lok Adalat will be constructed in the current fiscal, the Minister said.
To ensure speedy trial in courts, five new district munsif -cum- judicial magistrate courts will be established at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore. The new courts will come up at Vikravandi, Maduravoyal, Pallavaram, Kaarimangalam and Singampunari, he informed.
The Minister also announced the constitution of additional district munsif courts, judicial magistrate and sub-courts in Papireddipatti, Kumarapalayam, Kallakurichi, Musiri, Tirupur, Srivaikuntam and Nanguneri.
