Rajan Charles, employed in the anaesthesia department for the past 18 years had interest also in machinery and hardware. Apart from receiving diploma in anaesthesiology, he also completed a course in computer hardware.

“The idea to build a solar model which can work, took me three months and incurred an expenditure of Rs 40,000,” he said. For the question on converting the model into a life size prototype, he said, “It is possible if nearly 300 square feet solar panels are mounted on the vehicle and is powered by a high power DC motor.”

On the practicality of usingsolar buses on a regular basis, he said, “It will work like a regular geared vehicle without any hitch.”

He further added that he had sought an appointment with the then District Collector SA Raman when elections intervened. “I am now trying to meet the present Collector A Shanmugasundaram to seek his help in getting a government loan to build a workable prototype.”
