Efforts on to ensure Jolarpet water reaches city by July 10
Hectic activity is going on round-the-clock to ensure that water from the Hogenekkal Combined Water Scheme from the Jolarpet end reaches Chennai by July 10 to meet the requirement of the water-starved city, said official sources. The work is being undertaken at a cost of Rs 64 crore.

After three joint inspections conducted by officials of Southern Railway, Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage board (TWAD) and Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewage Board (Metrowater), trenches are being dug from the Jolarpet municipality’s ground level reservoir at Mettutharakakuppam to the railways overhead tank at Parsanpet. Three earth movers have been deployed to undertake the work for the 3.5 km distance.
Contractors have been directed to work round-the-clock, officials said, adding that pipes would be laid by Thursday. A high pressure pump is expected to be attached to the ground level reservoir by which water would be loaded into railway tankers and sent to Chennai by July 10.
