Since transporting oil from the Narimanam refinery by roadways was considered to be time consuming and expensive, ONGC has been undertaking the laying of the pipelines which would facilitate the carrying of the petroleum products to the terminal at Vazhavanthankottai in Tiruchy district. The work commenced from Nagapattinam recently and has been continuing in many places. As these pipes were being laid along fertile lands used for cultivation, the farmers in the region have been protesting for a while now.

In this backdrop, as a part of the pipe-laying project, a team of workers involved in the task and a truckload of pipes was unloaded late evening on Thursday. However, a gang allegedly torched the pipes placed there. Since the pipes had chemical coating, it fanned up across the load, but the metallic nature of the pipes reportedly prevented extensive damage.

The Ammapettai police have registered a case and a search is on for the miscreants.
