DNA test demanded after Salem GH ‘swaps’ newborn
In what could be a major faux pas, the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital authorities in Salem on Wednesday handed over a baby girl to a couple after informing them that their newborn was a boy. The confusion soon triggered a protest by the parents and family members, who then sought a DNA test to be done for confirmation.

According to the police, Gomathy, wife of Venkatesh from Kadayampatty in Salem, got admitted in the hospital on Tuesday. After receiving consent from the family, the doctors performed a caesarean surgery on Wednesday.
The hospital staff then informed the family members waiting outside the labour ward that the newborn was a boy.
After a while, a few doctors who came to get Venkatesh’s signature to perform a family planning surgery on his wife, informed him that the newborn was a girl and not a boy. The family members, who grew upset over the different claims of the hospital staff, broke into a quarrel with them.
The kin of the couple alleged that the hospital staff had swapped the baby.
“We have no issues in our newborn being a girl or boy. However, we fear of malpractice by hospital staff as only recently was a baby selling racket busted in this region. So, a DNA test should be done for confirmation,” Venkatesh told media.
The senior doctors at the hospital informed the irate family members that it was the only delivery in the hospital on the day and that there was no possibility of baby swapping. They also expressed their regret for the confusion.
