Chennai-Madurai travel time to be reduced as express trains speed up
The departure time of Nellai Express and Anantapuri Express trains from Chennai Egmore will be changed from September 1st.

Speed of about 10 trains has been accelerated between Chennai and Madurai route to avoid delays in arrival. When the Southern Railways’ new time schedule comes into effect, the travelling time between Chennai and Madurai is expected to decrease by 5-30 minutes.
Southern Railway's new time schedule is coming to effect by July 1st. This step is aimed to facilitate the passengers to reach the destination on time and avoid delays.
According to the new time schedule, the travel time between Chennai-Madurai will be reduced by 7-50 minutes. The Pandian Express and Anantapuri Express trains are expected to benefit from this.
Currently, about 495 km between Chennai and Madurai route is covered by the Pandian Express train in 8 hours and 5 minutes and the Anantapuri Express train in 8 hours and 20 minutes. The Chennai-Kollam Express train will be reaching the destination up to 20 minutes ahead and the Guruvayur Express train 10 minutes ahead. The Nellai Express and Muthunagar Express trains will be speeded up by 5 minutes.
The departure time of Nellai Express and Anantapuri Express trains from Chennai Egmore will be changed from September 1st. The Nellai Express will leave at 7.50 pm and Anantapuri Express at 8.10 pm.
It is to be noted that after 15 months of the completion of electrification along the double line between Chennai and Madurai, the train time has reduced.
