Warning against the illegal diversion and usage of drinking water, the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) head on Tuesday said that an FIR would be registered against those involving in such acts. He also assured of uninterrupted drinking water supply to all the districts in the State and works to execute the supply of water to Chennai from Jolarpet being completed within a week.
Speaking to the media after a review meeting with officials from various districts over drinking water distribution, TWAD Managing Director Dr C N Maheswaran said that the TWAD board has been conducting review meetings across the State to ensure uninterrupted supply to the residents.
The TWAD board has been supplying 2146 MLD of water through as many as 556 waterbodies controlled by the board. “Since the ground water level has gone below 17.6 metres, the TWAD board has initiated as many as 325 works to the tune of Rs 27.24 crore, among which as many as 177 works were competed. Besides, an additional fund of Rs 16 crore has been allotted for 70 other works. Once these works get completed, an additional of 40 MLD safe drinking water would be distributed each day,” he said.
Stating that the TWAD board is keen on distributing pure drinking water to as many as 17 districts, including those that are identified as vulnerable districts, Maheswaran said Dindigul district would receive water from the Natham drinking water project. Similarly, the project on the supply of water to Chennai from Jolarpet would be completed in a week’s time and the distribution would take effect subsequently, he said. “We have deputed special officers to monitor the water distribution and they would send the daily report on the water supply,” he added.
Meanwhile, Maheswaran said that drinking water should not be diverted for any other purposes, and warned that those indulging in such practice would face severe action. The TWAD board has reportedly informed the police department to file FIRs against those who touch pipes, motors, electric and electronic devices without the permission of the TWAD board or the District Collector. He also added that complaints can be registered over mobile phone at 94458 02145.
