Solid waste management plan opposed
Despite several rounds of talks on Monday, the residents of Kaveripuram hamlet in Nemili town panchayat near Arakkonam refused to accept a solid waste management plan that was proposed for the locality.
Vellore
While the villages have been resisting the plan for more than a year, the town panchayat officials accompanied by a posse of 100 policemen arrived in the village on Monday based on the orders of Collector SA Raman.
As the information spread among the villagers, they were involved in a heated argument with the officials. The locals said that they did not want the scheme in their village as it would affect water sources, cause air pollution, emanate foul odour and create health issues for the people. The villagers also blocked the Nemili road demanding to the move the scheme out. As the villagers refused to budge, the officials formed a 15-member committee to discuss the issue and create awareness.
