Addressing reporters, Satish said a total of 330 cusecs of water was being supplied from Papanasam, Manimuthar and Servalar dams through TWAD Board under the combined water supply scheme to cater to the basic needs of people in Tirunelveli and neighbouring Thoothukudi and Virudhunagar districts.
Of the 669 summer management works taken up for implementation by the Rural Development department, 528 works have been completed so far, she said. Some of the works include drilling borewells, laying of pipelines and construction of open wells.
According to her, borewells were drilled in various town panchayats at a cost of Rs 36 lakh with an additional 20 borewells set to come up soon at a cost of Rs 70 lakh.
After reviewing arrangements made by the district administration to supply water, Industries Commissioner Rajendra Kumar, who is the monitoring officer for the district, on Saturday Kumar said, “Since Tirunelveli district normally receives a good amount of rain during both monsoon seasons, there won’t be any problem.”
“Except in parts of Sankarankoil and Puliyangudi municipalities where water supply pressure has dropped, other areas in the district have not faced any issues,” the senior IAS officer said.
“With rainfall predicted, an additional inflow is expected in dams in the coming days. Furthermore, local water sources have been identified at several locations and are being utilised,” Kumar said.
