Woman cop assaults lawyer, suspended

The incident occurred on Monday evening on the AWPS premises after Thyagu (35), the lawyer, intervened during inquiry of a couple over their marriage registration, sources said. The couple, Manoj and Sathya, was summoned by Inspector Vasanthi, as the girl’s mother objected to the marriage and lodged a complaint with the AWPS.

While the two lawyers appearing for the couple were asked to leave during the course of inquiry, Thyagu, the lawyer representing Sathya, refused to do so. This led to a quarrel between the Inspector and the lawyer, and all of a sudden, the lawyer allegedly slapped the Inspector, who in retaliation, reportedly assaulted him with a lathi. The injured lawyer was later admitted to Dindigul Government Hospital.

In the wake of the incident, lawyers en masse laid siege to the police station and sought action against the Inspector. The irate mob also used filthy language against Vasanthi. Besides blocking vehicular traffic on Dindigul main road, the lawyers also boycotted court proceedings, sources said. Frustrated by the irate mob, Vasanthi reportedly consumed toilet cleaner in a bid to end her life. The Inspector was also soon admitted to hospital, sources said. The Dindigul North Town police have filed a case against both the lawyer and the Inspector.
