Villagers from Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district filled the local village pond in Nayinarkoil using broken water pipe from Cauvery joint drinking water project. The Villagers also said that the officials have been negligent for more than six months to repair the pipeline.

As many as 37 Panchayats under Nayinarkoil union have been facing acute drinking water crisis. Most of the water resources in the village are dry.

The pipe in the Cauvery joint drinking water project situated near Marudhavanam Makhaliyamman temple was broken and gallons water was wasted.

The villagers in that area dug a small stream with the help of the Poclain machine and diverted the water to a nearby pond. Now, the pond is getting filled with water every day. Due to the villagers’ timely act, the ground water in the vicinity of the Marudhavanam Makhaliyamman temple is now very good. The people in the area said, it is painful to see the negligence of authorities in the village over the wastage of drinking water in times of state-wide water crisis.

The villagers also added, “There are 37 Panchayats in the Nayinarkoil union. It comprises of 101 villages. People in these villages are suffering from lack of drinking water. They are making use of water which is going wasted from leaking pipes in and around the areas.”

“It is disturbing to see the negligence of authorities over water wastage in this dire situation. Many villages in the union will not face drinking water crisis if the leaking water is properly utilized and distributed. Therefore, the relevant authorities should act swiftly without prejudice to better the situation,” they said.
