When contacted, Directorof Medical Education A Edwin Joe said the action was taken based on allegations of ‘misbehaviour’ raised by house surgeons, also known as ‘Compulsory Rotatory Residential Interns’ (CRRI), working in themedical college.

According to sources, the doctor identified as N Kandasamy, who worked as an Assistant Professor, had allegedly sought sexual favours from some of the house surgeons.

“He was also charged with indecency and immoral behaviour after intimidating them to yield to his desire. The house surgeons were warned that their course completion certificates would not be issued if they did not comply with his demands. Moreover, the doctor was also alleged to have lured them through phone calls,” sources said.

The affected house surgeons had recently submitted a petition to Dean S Balasubramanian seeking action against the doctor. They said mere action against the doctor would not be enough and called for his transfer out of the college.

Balasubramanian said he received an anonymous letter on June 11 which raised allegations against Kandasamy, who was relieved from the college as per the DME’s directions. Based on the letter, an enquiry was held, and its report was forwarded to the Director, he said.

However, the Department staff have claimed that charges levelled against Kandasamy, who worked at the Thoothukudi college for the last three years.
