Transpersons to get jobs under women’s quota: Govt
The Tamil Nadu government has informed the Madras High Court that transpersons can register themselves in the Employment Exchange under the category ‘third gender’ and those registered under that category will be considered against both 30 per cent reservation for women as well as 70 per cent meant for the general category (both male/female).

The submission was in response to a PIL seeking to implement a separate reservation policy for transpersons and intersex people in education and public employment instead of merely including them in the list of Most Backward Classes (MBC).
The status report filed by V Amuthavalli, Commissioner, Social Welfare, on Friday, before a division bench comprising Justice S Manikumar and Justice Subramonium Prasad, said third genders who do not possess any community certificate will be considered under MBC.
The status report also noted that those registered as members of the Third Gender Welfare Board (TGWB) are provided with documents like ID cards, health insurance card, ration card, voter ID cards, housing patta and housing facilities through convergence with other departments. Moreover, the grant amount of Rs 20,000 sanctioned to third genders who opt for self-employment business has been enhanced to Rs 50,000.
As many as 260 third genders residing in Chennai have been recommended for the sanction of Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board tenements. Housing allotment to 260 such people was done in 2015 and during 2018-19, 255 houses were allotted to 255 third genders by the Housing Board and Urban Development. For the aged destitute third genders, the government has introduced monthly pension scheme of Rs 1,000 per month who are above 40 years of age, the status report said. The bench posted the matter to July 17 for further hearing.
