Assaulted by shopkeeper, claims popular scriptwriter Jeyamohan

The incident reportedly occurred around 8 pm at a grocery store in Parvathipuram where a wordy quarrel over a trivial issue allegedly led to assault.

When contacted, G. Jawahar, the Nagercoil Assistant Superintendent of Police, said shopkeeper N. Selvan (51), who was accused of assaulting Jeyamohan, has been arrested.

Investigations revealed that Jeyamohan, who resided at Saradha Nagar, bought two packets of batter from the grocery store. After realising that the atta turned sour and went putrid, and having checked the manufacturing date to see if the product lost its shelf life, he took it to the store, where Selvan’s wife was present at that point of time, and gave it back. However, the shopkeeper’s wife refused to take the product back, and when Jeyamohan quarreled over this, he reportedly threw it inside the store in frustration.

Meanwhile, Selvan, who was allegedly drunk, intervened when the quarrel erupted, and slapped Jeyamohan. Selvan also reportedly followed him to his house and abused him there too.

In the wake of the incident, Jeyamohan was admitted to the Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital at Asaripallam. On the other hand, Selvan’s wife was also hospitalised after she claimed that Jeyamohan had assaulted her. Despite having taken a look at the manufacturing date of the batter packets, he bought it and returned after half an hour to give it back, she claimed.  

However, Nagercoil ASP Jawahar said the investigation team gathered CCTV footage, which reportedly showed Selvan slapping Jeyamohan, and not as being claimed by Selvan’s wife. It is said that Selvan, being a functionary of the DMK, Mahesh, the party town secretary from Nagercoil, along with lawyers went to the Nesamony police station in support of Selvan.

Based on a complaint lodged by Jeyamohan, the Nesamony Nagar police have filed a case against Selvan under Sections 323 and 506 (ii) of the IPC and remanded him to judicial custody. Based on petition submitted by Selvan’s wife, an entry was made in the Community Service Register (CSR), the ASP said
