    More than 3,000 students studying in private schools have switched over to government schools following efforts made by the district administration and the School Education Department, said Chief Educational Officer (CEO) V Jayakumar.

    In Tiruvannamalai district, Arni ranks first with highest number of students switching to government schools. In Arni alone, around 28 students joined classes between 1 and 5 and another 56 joined classes between 6 and 10.


    Jayakumar told this reporter that Arni educational officials aided with local small and medium traders’ association highlighted the advantages of joining government schools, including free textbooks and education without fee.


    Regarding complaints lodged by some parents that private schools were refusing to issue Transfer Certificates (TCs), Jayakumar asserted that students could join the government schools of their choice even without a TC. He also added that he would initiate action to get TCs from private schools and warned that punitive action would be taken if parents lodge a complaint in writing against the institutions. Jayakumar said that English medium classes were started in 57 government schools in Arni panchayat union with the help of funds provided by respective Parents Teachers Association (PTA) for paying English teachers.


    Meanwhile, middle, high and higher secondary schools in Tiruvannamalai district would soon be preparing students for competitive exams helmed by the respective school head and a senior teacher, according toJayakumar.


    “They will identify students with aptitude to undertake competitive exams and will later provide them with information on general knowledge and undertake sessions to allay the fear of attending competitive exams” he averred.


    “This move is expected to ensure that students will fully be geared to face the challenge in addition to having no exam related fear,” he added.
