Stop illegal water tapping: Minjur residents
Residents of Kondakarai village near Minjur staged a protest on Tuesday demanding action against private parties who indulged in tapping ground water through illegal borewells and selling them off for a price.
Tiruvallur
Hundreds of residents of the village gathered at the Ponneri – Tiruvottiyur Highway gathered in order to ask the concerned officials to take action against illegal extraction of water besides providing regular drinking water supply to the local residents.
The protesters claimed that more than 5000 families, several of whom were involved in agriculture suffered due to the illegal borewells, as the ground water levels in these areas were rapidly depleting.
As news spread of the protest, Tiruvallur district revenue officials and local police rushed to the spot and held talks with the protesters. Deputy Tahsildar Selva Kumar held talks with the protesters and assured them that a speedy action will be taken against the illegal extraction of water. They also assured that the drinking water supply frequency will also be improved.
The protesters dispersed after they were assured by revenue officials. Traffic was stalled for about 45 minutes on the busy highway due to the protests.
