Collector revamps govt school into model school
When the Tiruvannamalai panchayat union primary school at Vengikkal was selected to be converted into a model school by Collector KS Kandasamy recently, the 56 tiny tots and 2 teachers of the school were pleasantly surprised by the move.

Revealing to DT Next, he said, “Whenever we inspect government schools and pull up teachers on various issues, they usually ask how a good school should be. Hence, I thought I can show them the example by converting an existing school into a model school.”
“The model school which is expected to be inaugurated on June 17 will easily be a rival for any private school as far as the facilities are concerned,” said government officials privy to the project.
On the infrastructural development made to the school, Kandasamy said, “The school has been painted afresh and we have made efforts to create an ambience which would encourage the kids to study.”
The classrooms have been painted in various hues while plastic mats have been provided to students for resting during leisure hours in school. Colourfully painted tables and chairs have been provided, “While each kid will also be given a rack to store books,” Kandasamy said.
In a way to encourage extra-curricular activities, “The school will have a bird cage with enough birds for each child to foster,” he added. All students would be provided T shirts procured from Chennai, with the name of the school printed on it,Kandasamy said.
The work for the model school project started a month ago with a budget of Rs 17 lakh. On the fund for the project, officials said, “The Collector received Rs 11 lakh from Mines and Minerals Department and the remaining Rs 9 lakh was collected from the Chennai Trade Center as part of their corporation social responsibility (CSR).” While Rs 6 lakh from CSR was spent on this project, “The remaining Rs 3 lakh was spent to provide facilities for another school nearby,” they added.
“With works nearing completion on the town’s first science park in front of the collector’s office and the model school located nearby, both the projects will attract teachers interested in improving school education in the district,” averred officials.
