Governor makes ‘courtesy call’ on Amit Shah
Amid brewing political tension in the State, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit met Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah and apprised him of the political situation in Tamil Nadu on Monday.
Chennai
Purohit was one among the governors of five states who had individual meetings with the newly appointed Home Minister Amit Shah. Officials described the meetings as courtesy calls on the new Home Minister, who assumed charge about 10 days ago.
Purohit left by the morning flight and is expected to stay in the Capital till Tuesday. His visit assumes significance as demand for the release of convicts in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case is increasing with every passing day with the leaders of various political parties issuing statements in connection to that.
On June 3, the Tamil Nadu government informed the Madras High Court that it was expecting Governor Banwarilal Purohit to pass an order on the Cabinet recommendation for the release of all the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case within two weeks.
Despite AIADMK government’s recommendation to the Governor to release of all seven life convicts, there has been no indication from the Raj Bhavan on the release. In addition to the TN governor, Shah also held meetings with West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi, Telangana’s ESL Narasimhan, who is also the Governor of Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand’s Draupadi Murmu and Arunachal Pradesh’s Brigadier (Retd) BD Mishra, a Home Ministry official said.
The Governors discussed issues concerning their respective state, the official said. Though there was no official word on it, sources said Purohit may also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
