Scores of volunteers, including environmental activists and representatives of voluntary organisations took part in a series of programmes to raise awareness about environment and its changes. To mark the day, Wildlife officials in Kandamanur Forest Range, one of the six ranges in Megamalai Wildlife Division, in association with a voluntary organisation in Theni district, organised a programme, through which cloth bags were given to people insisting them to give up using plastic bags and use cloth bags for a pollution free environment.
Besides, saplings of different tree species were given to people to increase the green cover, Sachin Bhosale, Wildlife Warden of Megamalai Wildlife Division, said. With the keen involvement of 70 village forest committees under the division and wildlife officials, conservation efforts were being carried out.
Campaigners launched a bicycle awareness rally on the occasion to prevent ill effects of air pollution at a programme organised by the Kovilpatti Rotary Club in association with Kovilpatti Municipality and National Green Corps of the district. They carried placards that read ‘Beat Air Pollution’, ‘Plant more tree saplings for rain’ and ‘Use bicycles for good health’ during the rally, which was flagged off by Kovilpatti Deputy Superintendent of Police Jebaraj on Kovilpatti Park road. Kovilpatti Municipal Commissioner Achaya presided over the programme.
