Puducherry
Talking to reporters here after an interaction, Jayaraman said that the committee will not allow the hydrocarbon mining scheme which would totally destroy Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
He said the Central government is trying to impose the scheme on 41 sq km in Puducherry and Karaikal and in 5,099 km in Tamil Nadu. He said the entire Cauvery Delta will be destroyed by this scheme and in another 20 years the Cauvery Delta will be below the sea level and sea intrusion will occur.
In such a situation, 56 lakh people will have to go as refugees, he said and wondered to which state they will go. The people of the Delta are on an all-out effort to thwart the scheme, he said adding that knowing the seriousness, the people of Puducherry also are now opposing the scheme.
He said that the Cauvery Delta be announced as a protected Agricultural Zone by the state government which alone would protect the Delta.
Earlier, in an interaction organised by ‘Bhoovulagin Nanbargal’ Jayaraman said that the hydrocarbon mining scheme is more dangerous than Tsunami. Pointing out the ONGC digging wells in residential areas in 1984, he said several areas of Tamil Nadu is becoming a desert from 1984.
