It may be recalled that then GM KS Murali Prasad along with five Vellore dairy staff were suspended following the checks that revealed Rs 1.5 crore worth milk being supplied to a non-existing dairy in Kallakurichi and another 1.50 lakh litres went missing milk which was claimed to have ‘evaporated’. “The union was then in a slump due to accumulated losses,” said the current GM V Kothandaraman who was appointed after the former was charged with guilt. “It was then when the Chennai based federation which gave Kothandaraman unlimited discretionary power to act under carte blanch to turn the unit around,” Vellore dairy sources revealed.

With daily milk procurement now stabilising at 3.85 lakh litres a day, the dairy sends most of its ghee produce for sales in Chennai. “Recently we produced 25 tonnes of butter into ghee at Krishnangiri for sale,” Kothandaraman said.

Based on the positive impact, the federation has ordered the Vellore unit to start at Rs 75 lakh to produce 20,000 cups per day ice cream plant at its Sathuvachari dairy. “We now have to work to create a market for Aavin ice cream in Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts” he said.

As the centre was taking a positive curve, the Vellore dairy celebrated Milk Day a few days ago and handed out prizes and certificates to best retailer, best wholesaler, best BMC (Bulk Milk Cooler), best village dairy staff and best milk farmer.

When asked about the proposal to increase milk prices, he said, “Since the private dairies have increased retail and milk procurement prices by Rs two, we had to provide something similar, otherwise we face the danger of milk farmers supplying milk to private dairies.”
