Steps taken to boost Tiruvannamalai NAS standing
The Tiruvannamalai Chief Education Office has chalked out a series of measures to ensure that the district improves its standing in the National Achievement Survey (NAS) which will be undertaken by the Central Government’s Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) in December this year, according to CEO V Jayakumar.

“Currently Tiruvannamalai standing in the survey is around 50 per cent against various survey parameters. However, once various schemes chalked out are implemented we expect the district’s ranking to cross the 80 per cent mark,” Jayakumar added.
Talking to DT Next, he said, “This year, the survey will be for Classes 3, 6, 8 and 10. With this in view, we banned the use of guides by students as it would stunt their thinking ability.” He also added that directives have been issued to 12,000 teachers in elementary, middle, high and higher secondary government schools which cater to the needs of 4.05 lakh students in the district. This is to ensure that students are taught how to take hints in a class and how to develop them later when studying.
Students thinking abilities have been categorized into low, middle and high order thinking and guides are banned since they developed only low order thinking in students. “Low order thinking involves direct answers to questions whereas middle order and high order thinking will ensure that students develop their creative, critical, analytical skills,” Jayakumar added.
In a bid to ensure no delay, the new process was started from Monday when the academic year started all over Tamil Nadu. Teachers have been asked to send daily, weekly and monthly reports on the progress made under the new initiative to ensure that no one area lags behind the other, sources revealed.
Teachers felt that the students will realise the advantages of following the new system when it works successfully by automatically pushing up the board exam results in the district.
