Though he was rushed to the hospital, Peter died on the way. The deceased is survived by his wife Josephine Mary, 30, and a five-year-old son.

John Peter, 35, who was posted as soldier in Pathankot, Punjab, came home on leave 10 days ago. On Tuesday, he had just stepped out when he saw a hen fall into a 70 ft-deep dry well, situated opposite his house.Without a second thought, Peter tied a rope around himself and started his descent into the well.

However, when he was halfway up after rescuing the hen, Peter lost his grip, slipped and fell, sustaining multiple fractures. The local residents, who had gathered by then, rushed to his rescue and also informed the fire and rescue personnel and 108 ambulance service.

As soon as the ambulance reached the spot, a few boys brought Peter and the hen out of the well and put him on a stretcher. Peter was immediately rushed to a hospital in Manapparai, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way. Manapparai police have registered a case. Further investigation is on.
