Helmet rule: Top traffic police officers summoned
Coming down strongly on the poor enforcement of compulsory helmet rule for two-wheeler riders as wells as pillion riders, the Madras HC on Tuesday summoned both the Joint and Deputy commissioners of Police, Traffic to be present in court on June 6 to explain the extent of enforcement in vogue.

A division bench comprising Justice S Manikumar and Justice Subramonium Prasad, before whom a public interest litigation moved by one KK Rajendran seeking strict implementation of the helmet rule to avert rapidly growing instances of fatality owing to bike accidents came up, said that despite several court directions, the rule has not been enforced effectively.
Pointing out to the recent incident in which two youths lost their lives, racing on the main thoroughfares without helmet, raised a volley of questions about the police action that had transpired in checking such racing and enforcement of the compulsory helmet rule.
While the government advocate submitted that besides stringent action against those who fail to use helmets, several awareness camps are being held on a regular basis especially among youth to ensure that they wear helmets, the bench posted the plea to Thursday after directing both the police officers to be present in court with all details relating to action taken against those riding bikes without wearing helmets.
