Internal inquires held following reports of a few inmates of the Tiruchy central prison spending an entire night outside the jail have found that a jail staffer had let them out.

According to sources, as many as 12 life convicts lodged in the prison went for agriculture work on June 1. They were absent for the evening roll call which took place around 4.30 pm. It was then found that they took part in a party outside the prison and returned around 9 am the next day.

The information concerning their absence quickly spread among the other inmates and people outside.

Subsequently, a few jail authorities attempted to alter documents making it appear as if the 12 inmates were inside the prison through the day.

However, this was reportedly opposed by a few other officials, leading to averbal altercation between the two groups.

An internal inquiry has found that one jail staffer, who permitted the inmates to attend the party, was also responsible for allowing them to stay outside.

Meanwhile, information about the incident was brought to the knowledge of ADGP (Prisons), who is expected to visit the prisonfor an official inquiry, sources said.
