    Pre-monsoon rain filling up dams

    The dams in northern part of the state are getting good inflow, thanks to pre-monsoon rain in Karnataka.

    According to officials of Public Works Department (PWD), the inflow to Mettur dam is 62 cusecs and in Bhavanisagar dam 986 cusecs. The increased inflow is due to heavy rain in catchment areas of the rivers in Karnataka and the dams in Karnataka getting increased inflow.


    On Friday, the water level in Mettur dam stood at 46.69 feet and the storage level was 15,791 mcft. When compared to the water level in the dam on the same date last year, Mettur had 37.88 feet and the storage was 10,755 mcft.


    Similarly, in Bhavanisagar, the dam level was high compared to the previous year. As on Friday, the water level stood at 53.64 feet and storage was 5,366 mcft. This was slightly higher when compared to the previous year where the water level was 53.23 feet and the storage was 5,255 mcft.


    Another dam in the northern part of the state which has received huge amount of water is Kelavarapalli dam constructed across Ponnair river in Krishnagiri district. Due to heavy rain in the catchment area of Ponnair river, the water inflow to the dam increased by 200 cusecs from Thursday and as on Friday, the total inflow was 720 cusecs.


    The water level in the dam stood at 41.9 feet and considering the safety of the dam, the entire inflow had been released from the dam.


    On the other side, the water bodies in other parts of the state, including the major water suppliers in the city have gone bone dry. When compared to the previous year, the water level in all the dams have gone down.
