Board results boost govt school admissions in Tiruvannamalai
Buoyed by the impressive performance in the board examinations last year due to several efforts made by collector KS Kandasamy, government schools in Tiruvannamalai district anticipate a 40% increase in admissions in the coming academic year.

CEO V Jayakumar told DT Next, “the collector’s repeated publicity of facilities available in government schools on par with the private institutions paid off and the results bore a testimony to it. We expect the trend to continue and surely it will reflect in the admission rate in government schools in the coming year.”
In fact, the Tiruvannamalai Municipality Model Girls Higher Secondary School has already recorded 400 admissions for classes LKG to sixth. For the LKG alone, 145 admissions, which is nearly one-fourth of the total number, have been registered, according to headmistress P Jothi Lakshmi.
When asked about the good number of admissions, she said, “Our teachers work hard and ensure that we get top results every year. Students participate and win in various extra-curricular activities. Such track records draw the attention of the public and there is a significant increase in admissions.”
Teachers of the school attribute to strenuous effort to the increase in admissions, which rose from 2000 to the present 3600 within a few years.
Another factor which helped in major way was the key role played by the alumni to help their alma maters in the admission exercise. “When the collector and I attended a function at a government school in Vettavalam, on stage was a 99-year-old teacher, who retired from the same school 40 years ago” Jayakumar said.
District education officials were encouraged when a teacher couple working in government school admitted their children in a government school at Poondi village in Kalasapakkam Panchayat union. Sivanesan, a teacher in the Government Girls Higher Secondary School at Kalasapakkam and his wife Sungatha a teacher at the PU Middle School at Alangaramangalam admitted their children Pratiksha and Raghavaprasad in class 10 and class 7 respectively. This move was welcomed by school head Ebinesan. The couple’s act was appreciated on social media.
