On the penultimate day, the applications seeking engineering seats for both academic and vocational courses has touched 1.30 lakh, officials said. On Thursday alone, the department, which has undertaken the counselling for the students this year following rift with Anna University, has received over 20,000 online applications from the students.

A senior official said at least 10,000 students were expected to register online on the last day. According to him, cities such as Chennai, Madurai, Salem and Vellore were leading in terms of number of applications received – around 8,000 applications each – Perambalur and The Nilgiris received only 1,000 and 500 applications.

There are about 1.5 lakh engineering seats in government and private colleges in the State.

Adding that random numbers would be generated for the registered candidates on June 3, the DoTE official said the applicants would then have to visit the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) facilitation centres for certificate verification from June 6 to June 11. The official added that the government has established 42 such centres across the State where students can seek any help regarding admissions.

“More than 50,000 students have used the facilitation centre for registering their applications,” the official said. He said the rank list would be announced on June 17 and the counselling would be held from July 3 to 28. As per the schedule, the colleges would open by the second week of August.

After the Anna University refused to conduct admissions counselling this year, the department had to take up the responsibility.
