According to sources, the HC’s order follows a case moved by a few individuals some time ago. The petitioners claimed that the parking space earmarked for customers was instead used as a godown. As a result, customers were forced to park their vehicles in public space causing traffic hurdles, they said, adding that there were no open spaces in each floor of the commercial complex as mandated.

Armed with the court order, a team led by LPA member-secretary Shanmugam, corporation town planning officer Ravichandran visited the store around 10am and asked the staff to leave the premises. However, they vehemently resisted the lock and seal drive triggering tension. Several police personnel were then deployed to prevent any untoward incident. Subsequently, the officials downed shutters and sealed the complex.

A notice was also stuck informing people about the ban on entering the sealed premises. Barricades were also put up blocking the way to the complex. A compliance report is likely to be filed in the court, sources said. It may be recalled that another branch of the retail chain, situated at Melapalayam in Tirunelveli district, was sealed in July 2017 for a similar offence.
