DMK romps home at Tiruparankundram after 18 yrs
DMK party candidate P. Saravanan’s win in the Tiruparankundram constituency by-poll has ensured the comeback of the party after nearly 18 years in what is otherwise considered to be an AIADMK stronghold in the district.

Claiming a vote share of 37.79%, Saravanan’s victory over in Muniyandi of the AIADMK in the by-poll--whose results were announced recently—led to a moral boost not just for the DMK, but also for Saravanan, who earlier contested from the same constituency in 2016, but lost to the AIADMK’s candidate then.
The recent win led to the DMK tasting victory in the constituency here in the district after 18 years, which has witnessed two by-polls in just a span of three years.
The by-polls to the constituency here were necessitated by the demise of AIADMK candidate SM Seenivelu in 2016 and AK Bose of the same party in 2018. It was during 1989 when the AIADMK split into two factions-one led by VN Janaki Ammal and the other by J Jayalalithaa-after the demise of AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran that saw C Ramachandran of the DMK securing victory in Tiruparankundram after defeating contestants from the AIADMK factions.
The DMK veteran got a total of 64,632 votes to his credit. A similar trend emerged in the same constituency now, after the AIADMK was split into factions-one led by CM Edappadi K. Palaniswami and the other by TTV Dhinakaran, deputy general secretary of the AMMK.
