Naam Tamilar Katchi breaks new ground

The Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) led by Seeman seems to have made a notable mark in the political scene in Tamil Nadu after it bagged the fourth highest votes only next to the DMK alliance, the AIADMK alliance and the AMMK, by securing 3.89 percentage votes.

During the election campaign, Seeman clarified that his party was not contesting the LS elections to win but to test the field. Going by Seeman’s words, the NTK has fared better than the 2016 Assembly elections, in which it obtained only 1.1 percentage votes.

Significantly, NTK and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) were seen as an alternative to the two Dravidian parties and the AMMK, which is led by TTV Dhinakaran.

The NTK candidates obtained a consistent number of votes in all the constituencies. In 2016, Seeman bagged the highest votes (12,497).

However, in the Lok Sabha elections this time, NTK candidates obtained more than 50,000 votes in 14 constituencies. NTK also came third in five constituencies by overcoming the MNM. On the other hand, the MNM failed to get more votes than the NTK, which probably shows that Kamal Haasan’s party had concentrated in a few pockets unlike the NTK which focussed evenly across the state.
