Addressing the gathering, Purohit said use of petrol, petroleum products, plastics and mindless dependence on artificial chemicals has resulted in serious environmental damage.

“In the last 200 years, we have had many technological innovations that have improved our standard of living. The use of electricity, use of vehicles for transportation and use of gadgets to improve communication have helped to make our living conditions better. But it is important to draw the line so that we do not exceed limits,” he said.

“So, I call upon everyone to take a pledge to reduce our consumption levels, recycle resources and promote use of renewable sources of energy.”

Stating that our ancestors knew the practice of sustainable development, Purohit said, “That is the reason India has had a continuing civilisation for more than 5,000 years. The agricultural practices were sustainable. The needs of the people were limited, and contentment was the principle. It was admired, appreciated and propagated.”

Pointing out that the government botanical gardens, where the flower show is being held, attracts around 30 lakh tourists every year, Purohit said flower shows such as this help people to appreciate the value of nature and teach them to treasure our resources.

“It is the enormous variety that makes the Ooty flower show a unique event. There are more than 150 varieties of cut flowers, various kinds of tropical and temperate vegetables and fruits on display. The floral decorations, vegetable carvings, flower rangoli and bonsai types are other major attractions,” he said.

Additional Chief Secretary to the Governor R Rajagopal, Agricultural Production Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Director of Horticulture and Plantation Crops Dr N Subbaiyan, District Collector J Innocent Divya, Inspector General of Police (West Zone) K Periaiah were among those who participated in the inaugural function.
