Located on the border of Shimoga and Uttara Kannada districts of Karnataka, Jog Falls is also called as Gerusoppe falls, Joga jalapatha and Jogada gundi in Kannada. Jog Falls is created by the Sharavathi River dropping 253 m (830 ft), making it the second-highest plunge waterfall in India after the Nohkalikai Falls with a drop of 335 m (1100 ft) in Meghalaya.

It’s not just one fall but four: Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket — and together they form Jog. The four streams are named according to their perception of trajectories:

    • Raja (king): Named because of the dignified and peaceful fall,
    • Rani (queen): the flow has a winding, twisting path, said to resemble the movements of a dancer
    • Roarer: This stream seems to have a mass of rocks, which caused a lot of noise (hence its name)
    • Rocket: consists of a large volume of water streaming from a small opening at a very high speed.

The Tourism Department has built steps from the viewpoint to the bottom of the hill where the waterfall can be seen at the opposite side. There are approximately 1,400 steps built to reach the bottom of the hill. While the whitewater torrents will stay etched in your mind, the green scenery completes the wild and wonderful picture.
