Palm tree climbing made easy in Tuticorin's Udangudi
Tree climber Murugaraj tells how new methods of tree climbing has hampered the otherwise lucrative palm nectar business.
Chennai
Udangudi has become the go-to place when it comes to palm nectar. The Udangudi town famous for its palm jaggery, is now known for its novel tree climbing method.
The traditional method was to climb tying both the legs with palm-fiber. This could cause injuries to the climber. Murugaraj, an experienced climber found a method that is both time efficient and safe.
He hitches the bamboo stick to the tree in an arrangement, using laders. ''One of the reasons for the decline of palm nectar business is the risks involved in the old method. If it is re-modelled in a climber-friendly way, the business would improve'', opined Murugaraj.
