Bouquets, brickbats for Kamal on terror talk
Actor turned politician Kamal Haasan’s Sunday campaign speech in Karur stating that the first terrorist in free India was a Hindu, referring Nadhuram Godse, who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi has created a ripple effect in poll-bound Tamil Nadu.

BJP and saffron leaders of the state are now demanding a ban on Kamal’s campaign stating that the actor was trying to divide the people, which according to the national party is a model code of conduct violation.
It all started during Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal’s campaign for his party candidate S Mohanraj in Aravakurichi Assembly seat on Sunday night.
“I am not saying this here (Aravakurichi) as Muslims are high in numbers. But, I am saying this before the statue of Mahatma Gandhiji. I have come here to get an answer for the killing of my great grandfather Gandhiji,” Kamal said. “I am one of the proud Indian, who wants the country to sustain its equality where all the three colours in our national flag remain intact. Terrorists are there in all religions and religions should not be used to practice terrorism and true Muslims will not embrace terrorism,” Kamal added.
Reacting to Kamal’s statement, BJP state chief Tamilisai Soundararajan and national secretary H Raja condemned the actor for his statement linking Hinduism and terrorism. “Who is Kamal to claim the legacy of Mahatma? Kamal who has been silent on the bomb blasts in Sri Lanka is now talking about terrorism. To get minority votes through polarisation Kamal is lighting a dangerous fire,” Tamilisai said.
“Uttering nonsense in a sensitive subject violating the poll code of conduct. Let us hope for the Election Commission to handle with all sense as per law of the land against hate speech,” Tamilisai tweeted.
BJP national secretary H Raja also concurred with Tamilisai saying that how Kamal could hurt Hindus for gaining Muslims’ votes. “MNM is a venomous plant which should be uprooted immediately,” BJP leader Raja told reporters.
However, Kamal also received support for his statement on ‘Hindu terrorism.’ Dravidar Kazhagam president K Veeramani has welcomed the actor’s statement saying “Nathuram Godse who killed Mahatma Gandhi was an ardent Hindu and Kamal is correct in his campaign speeches.”
