BE seats: 90,000 applications so far, DOTE sure of crossing 1 lakh

DOTE has so far received over 90,000 online applications from engineering aspirants. The Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) including registration, payments, choice filling, allotment and confirmation, was made online starting from last year.

A senior official from the DOTE told DT Next on Monday that the online registration and filing of applications commenced on May 2. “On the first day itself more than 15,000 candidates have registered themselves for engineering seats,” he added.

“As on Monday, about 90,200 applications were received online,” he said adding that since the deadline for the online registration goes till May 31, more than one lakh applications were expected to be issued.

Stating that the random numbers would be generated on June 3, the official said that the candidates would have to visit the TNEA facilitation centre for certificate verification between June 6 and June 11.

He pointed out that the government has established 42 facilitation centres across the State where students could seek help from the experts regarding admissions. “After publishing the rank list on June 17, the counselling will take place from July 3 to July 28,” he said.

The decision of DOTE to conduct counselling came against the backdrop of the difference of opinion between the Anna University Vice Chancellor M K Surappa and Higher Education Department over the reconstitution of TNEA committee. 

Accordingly, TN government issued an order under which Surappa was re-designated as co-chairman of TNEA and appointed K Vivekanandan as new TNEA chairman. Vivekanandan is currently serving as the Commissioner of Technical Education. However, this did not go down well with the VC and he recently resigned as the chairman of TNEA and AU announced that it would not conduct counselling this year.
