According to police, S Jayaselan, son of Selvam from Kalaignar Nagar in Nallur, and his sister Soniya (18) were on their way to the market in the locality to purchase food materials when the mishap took place.

Police said Jayaselan was riding the moped, while his sister was riding pillion. When they reached Vadakarai junction, a tanker lorry carrying 12,000 litres of oil crossed them. The two-wheeler, which was moving in a narrow space on the left side of the road that was filled with sand, skidded and the boy came under the wheels of the tanker, and died on the spot. Though Soniya too fell down, she escaped without being run over.

However, as Jayaselan came under the rear wheel of the vehicle, the tanker driver failed to notice the incident, police said. The passers-by who witnessed the accident immediately informed the Red Hills traffic investigation. A case has been registered and the tanker driver, Muruganandham (37) from Alangudi, has been arrested on charges of causing death due to negligence.
