    Anti-Sterlite meeting gets conditional nod

The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Thursday gave its nod for conducting a meeting in Thoothukudi on May 22 to commemorate the death of 13 people, who were killed during anti-Sterlite rally last year.

A petition filed by Fathima Babu seeking permission to conduct such meeting in Thoothukudi came up for hearing before a Division Bench of Justices GR Swaminathan and M Dhandapani.

On hearing, the bench granted permission with some conditions that the meeting should be convened with restricted participation of 250 persons for a period of two hours from 9 am to 11 am. Besides, proceedings during the meeting should be videographed by police and also by the petitioner and submit a list of those attended to Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police.

Meanwhile, the counsel on behalf of state government argued that any such meeting would create unnecessary problem since counting of votes polled during the Lok Sabha polls held last month is scheduled on May 23 and objected to such meeting.

But the petitioner counsel said the meeting was planned to be held in a private hotel and hence sought permission.
