The decision was taken at a crucial meeting of the syndicate, the highest decision-making body of the institution.

Chaired by Anna University Vice-chancellor MK Surappa, the syndicate also approved new syllabus for UG and PG students from the coming academic year, besides permitting the institution to hike tuition fees for its constituent and affiliated colleges, by a maximum of Rs 20,000 a year. The decision awaits the State government’s nod. Though the duration of all UG engineering courses is four years, students with arrears should clear it within three years after completing the course.

Anna University Registrar J Kumar said the syndicate move came against the backdrop of several representations from students who were unable to complete courses within stipulated time.

Stating that students were already given a chance to write arrears last year, Kumar said, “Despite this opportunity, many failed to utilise the chance,” adding, “This is their last chance to utilise the opportunity. It will be a special examination. Question papers will be set as per the previous syllabus.” On the new syllabus for UG and PG courses, the Registrar said, “The entire curriculum won’t change. Outdated bits would be replaced by topics relevant to industrial needs.”
