    TN swelters under extreme heat on 2nd day of Kathiri

    Many weather stations in the State are sizzling in the Kathiri heat, recording over 40 degrees Celsius, with Vellore (43.6 degrees Celsius) topping the list on Sunday – the second day of Kathiri month. Of the two stations in the city, Meenambakkam recorded a maximum of 39.1 degrees Celsius, while it was considerably lesser at Nungambakkam station where the mercury stood at 36.5 degrees Celsius.

    Of the 27 stations in the State, 7 crossed the 40-degree mark on Sunday. After Vellore, the highest temperatures during the day were recorded at Tiruchy (42.6 degrees), Tiruttani (42.5 degrees), Vellore (43.6), Karur Paramathi (41.2), Palayamkottai (40.8), Madurai airport (40.6) and Dharmapuri (40).


    Even as the temperatures soared in most places, few parts received rain as well. The showers were substantial at Sholingur in Vellore, which received 14 cm of rainfall on Sunday, while R K pet in Tiruvallur and Tiruttani received 7 cm and 1 cm of rain respectively.


    Meanwhile, after a spike in temperature for past three days, the city is likely to receive some respite, as the sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy from Monday. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 38 degrees Celsius and 30 degree Celsius respectively.


    According to weather blogger Pradeep John, with Fani fading away and westerlies weakening, the heat-based convergence rains are possible in the interior parts of Tamil Nadu. Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Tiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri and the western part of Vellore are expected to receive rainfall in the next 24 hours. However, Chennai would continue to remain hot, he said.
