Textile unit worker ends life over harassment by financial firm
A 43-year-old man committed suicide by consuming poison after being harassed by the staff of a private financial firm demanding exorbitant interest for a loan availed by him in Erode district.

Police said Sridhar from Palayapalayam and working in a textile firm had taken Rs 40,000 as a loan from the private financial firm for his family expenses. “So far, he had paid Rs 30,000. However the staff of the firm asked him to pay Rs 30,000 as interest,” police said.
Though Sridhar agreed to pay the pending principal amount of Rs 10,000 alone, the staff harassed him frequently demanding the exorbitant interest. Depressed over the developments and unable to pay the high-interest rate, Sridhar consumed poison on Monday. He was admitted in Erode Government Hospital in an unconscious state by family members. Despite treatment, Sridhar died on Wednesday night. Following this, Sridhar’s his wife Nathiya lodged a complaint with Surampatti police station demanding action.
Acting on her complaint, the police registered a case against two staff of the financial firm. Meanwhile, more than 50 relatives and family members of the deceased person laid siege to the Erode Government Hospital on Thursday, where the body of Sridhar was kept for a post mortem.
They sought the immediate arrest of the accused persons and refused to receive the body of the deceased. The Erode Town police led by DSP Radhakrishnan held talks with the agitating family members and assured action after investigations.They, left after receiving the body of the deceased.
Immolation bid by family at Tiruvannamalai
Tension prevailed for a while at the Tiruvannamalai collectorate after a building supervisor along with his three family members attempted self-immolation on Thursday demanding action against a usurers who frequently threatened them. Sources said that Manivannan, a building supervisor of Kayampattu village in Chengam taluk, had borrowed money from six persons at high rate of interest and was not able to repay the amount. So, the lenders were frequently threatened the family. Despite repeated complaints to the SP office, there was no action. Hence, he along with his wife and two sons came to the collectorate on Thursday and attempted self immolation.
