In a bid to establish transparency in the admissions to government arts and science colleges in the State, the Tamil Nadu government is mulling over the establishment of an online admission system that is similar to the process in vogue for admission to engineering colleges here. The system is likely to be in place from the next academic year, according to sources.

The online admission system would not only help students avoid going through the tedious task of visiting every college to obtain applications but also offer them a list of institutions to choose from in one application after registering their candidature online.

At present, government colleges and other aided arts and science colleges in the State distribute applications manually to students and the admission process is also being carried out likewise. Currently, more than 250 government and aided arts and science colleges function across the State.

A senior official from the Directorate of Collegiate Education told DT Next that the new initiative likely to be implemented from the next academic year will aid in transparent exhibition of the fee structure for various courses, including in UG and PG. “Moreover, seats are allotted to all the participating colleges online on the basis of marks scored by the students in Class XII board examination,” he added.

Accordingly, students who want to participate in the admission process online can register themselves in a portal, which is to be developed shortly.

Stating that admissions through the online system will be made purely on the basis of merit, the system will also factor in the applicant’s reservation category quota such as 31% for Open Category, 26.5% for Backward Classes, 20% for Most Backward Classes and De-Notified Communities, 15% for Scheduled Castes, 3% for Arunthathiyars and one per cent for Scheduled Tribes.

The official also noted that the process, besides enabling the students to fill their admission application online, will also aid in uploading their community certificate, mark sheet and other required documents.

“After allocating the seats, the counselling will also be carried out online”, he said, adding that certificate verification will, however, be done manually.

The official also pointed out that the online admission system will be implemented in all the 100-odd government and its aided polytechnic colleges in the State.
