Rameswaram CSG insecure over low security

In wake of the terror attacks carried out in Sri Lanka, the Coastal Security Group at Rameswaram which is at a short distance off the coast from Sri Lanka has been feeling insecure owing to absence of speed patrol boats or fast interceptor boats, sources said.

A fleet of five patrol boats existed in Rameswaram which is just about nine nautical miles from Sri Lankan coast, but all are under repair. While four such boats were under repair for a year, the other boat had been in poor condition for nearly six months. The boats have no batteries and face technical problems. Even two ‘All Terrain Vehicles’ meant for shore line patrolling were also not in use owing to poor maintenance. Though the security agency was formed under the purview of Central government, the top official had no powers of sanctioning funds. However, two boats were sought to hire to keep a vigil along the coast from Rameswaram to Thondi and Valinokkam and vice versa under the limits of eight Marine police stations in Ramanathapuram covering coastline of 240km, sources said.
