    20-yr-old nurse stabbed for spurning marriage proposal

    A 20-year-old trainee nurse was stabbed by a man, her relative, for refusing to marry him. Soon after attacking her with a knife, the man escaped from the hospital staff and climbed on top of the building, and consumed poison. Both have been admitted in Kancheepuram government hospital, with the attacker remaining in a critical condition.

    According to police, the victim Jayanthi from Echur village in Kancheepuram was working as a trainee nurse at a private hospital in Kancheepuram. Her parents had decided to marry her off to a relative, Muthu (26), an AC mechanic from Vandalur. However, Jayanthi was not interested in the proposal, and informed her parents, who accepted it as her decision. But Muthu was not willing to agree to this, and used to call her repeatedly to force her into marrying him.


    On Saturday morning, Muthu went to the hospital were Jayanthi has been working. Police said Muthu presented her a gift and asked her yet again to accept his proposal. But Jayanthi not only refused to accept it, she also shouted at him.


    Furious over this, Muthu took out a knife that he had kept hidden inside his pocket and attacked Jayanthi. The woman suffered stab injuries on her chest and shoulders, police said. The other staff at the hospital, who came to her rescue after hearing her cries, gave her first aid and rushed her to Kancheepuram Government Hospital.


    Even as she was being taken to the hospital, a section of the staff chased Muthu. But he managed to evade them and climbed on to the top floor of the private hospital building. Even before they could catch hold of him, Muthu consumed poison that he was carrying. He too was taken to the same hospital in Kancheepuram.


    Sources said he is in a critical condition, while she has been moved the ward. The Siva Kanchi policehave registered a case and are inquiring.
