The police claim that despite her naming the ambulance driver Murugesan and another nurse Parveen, the couple is not revealing the extent of the trade, or the actual number of babies they sold.

An official said, “We have yet to arrive at the number of babies sold in the racket as each of them was giving contradictory figures. They also refuse to reveal the names of details of those who bought the babies from them.” As Parveen hails from Erode district, the police have also set into motion a separate inquiry in Erode to unravel her links and find out who else was involved.

In the recorded clip of the conversation that went viral, Amuthavalli tells a man, who identifies himself as Sathish Kumar from Dharmapuri, that she can help him buy a baby and details the rates and other requirements for the transaction. “The rates would differ depending upon the gender, complexion and weight of the baby,” she is heard saying.

“For healthy female newborns, the rate would range between Rs 2.70 lakh and Rs 3 lakh. For male baby, if the newborn is healthy and of fair complexion, the price would range between Rs 4 lakh and Rs 4.5 lakh and for babies with brown complexion, the price would be between Rs 3.5 lakh and Rs 3.7 lakh,” she adds.

Amuthavalli is also heard saying she would be able to arrange for birth certificates for the newborns showing them as biological children of the buyer at additional charges.
